Standing Committees

The Charles County Branch of the NAACP offers a host of volunteer opportunities in the community through our Standing Committees. Below is a brief description of each Standing Committee. To join a committee send an e-mail message to the chairperson.

Legal Redress Committee - M. Janice Wilson, Chairperson
The Legal Redress Committee is responsible for investigating all reported incidents submitted to the Branch. This committee also supervises all litigation in which the Branch. It is also responsible for informing the National NAACP Office and the Charles County Branch, Unit 7016 informed of the progress of every case. The Legal Redress Committee does not provide legal advice.
You may print a Discrimination Complaint Form Based on: Race, Color, Religion, National Origin, Sex, Age and Handicapped Status. We ask that those who seek our assistance put their complaint in writing, and provide as much information as possible. The form should be mailed to the address below. The Legal Redress Committee will attempt to resolve your complaint where possible, or provide guidance to individuals on how to exercise their right to file administrative actions.

Membership and Life Membership Committee - Rose Shorter,Chairperson
The Membership Committee works throughout the year to maintain and increase the membership of the Charles County Branch. It is also responsible for planning and organizing the annual membership campaign; as well as on a continuous basis soliciting new members and securing renewals.

Freedom Fund Committee - Executive Board
The Freedom Fund Committee plans and conducts fund-raising activities, entertainment and other projects, for local and national purposes within the scope of the NAACP's program. Examples of activities include the Martin Luther King Celebration, Hall Of Fame Banuqet to name a few.

Education Committee - M. Janice Wilson, Chairperson
The Education Committee seeks to eliminate segregation and other discriminatory practices in public education. It studies local educational conditions affecting minority groups, investigates the public school system and school zoning. The committee familiarizes itself with textbook material in the county which is racially derogatory, it seeks to stimulate school attendance, keeps informed of school conditions and strives to correct abuses where found. It is also the responsibility of the committees to investigate the effects of standardized and high stakes testing practices, to include teacher certification, promoting parental involvement in education; as well as aiming to be a center of popular education on the race questions and on the work of the NAACP.

Political Action Committee - Wanda Woodland, Chairperson
The Political Action Committee seeks to increase registration and voting; works for the enactment of municipal, state and federal legislation designed to improve the educational, political and economic status of minority groups. The committee also seeks the repeal of racially discriminatory legislation; (works to improve the administration of justice. It is the committee's responsibility to work to secure equal enforcement of the law; and the Charles County Branch informed of all proposed legislation which affects minority groups. The Policital Action Committee is nonpartisan and does not endorse any candidates for public office.

Housing Committee - Aaron Tyler, Chairperson
The Housing Committee studies housing conditions in Charles County. The committee receives and seeks to address complaints of discrimination and opposes all restrictive practices whether public or private. The committee disseminates information and renders such other assistance which may eliminate discrimination in housing.

Communications Committee - Delores Walls, Chairperson
The Communication Committee promotes media content consistent with Charles County Branch goals which include the elimination of racial isolation and fear and the furtherance of multiracial and cultural understanding. The committee secures publicity for the work of the Branch in the local press and on radio, television and other media.

Youth Works - Vacant, Chairperson
The Youth Works develops and coordinates the programs which foster training and developing the skills necessary for leadership and activism. Mobilization, community education, and youth activities are essential focus areas of the Youth Council.
